Google Ads for auto detailers: what to run and what wastes money

By Steve Meitler · 2026-07-17 · 5 min read

Budgets, campaign structure, negative keywords and realistic cost per lead for detailing and ceramic coating searches, plus what drains a small budget.

Google Ads works for detailing, but only for part of it. Somebody typing "ceramic coating near me" is a buyer with a wallet out. Somebody typing "car wash near me" is looking for a tunnel that costs twelve dollars and will never book a $300 interior. Most detailers lose money on Google because they pay the same price for both clicks.

This guide is the structure that works, the keywords that quietly eat a budget, and the numbers to expect.

Start with the money, not the keywords

Work backwards from your average ticket. If a full detail bills $210 and you close 55% of the leads that reach you, each lead is worth about $115 in revenue. At a target of spending a quarter of revenue on customer acquisition, you can pay roughly $29 a lead and be fine.

Now do the same math on a coating. A $1,300 ceramic coating closing at 30% makes a lead worth $390, and you can pay $90 or more for it without blinking. Those are two different businesses and they need two different campaigns with two different budgets.

Minimum viable spend is about $900 a month. Below roughly $30 a day, Google does not gather enough data to optimize and you get a trickle of clicks with no pattern. If $900 is not available, put the money into reviews and your profile first and come back. The reviews guide is the cheaper starting point.

Campaign structure

Three search campaigns, separated by intent and budget, all on phrase and exact match. Do not use broad match on a small budget in this category; it is where the money goes to die.

Campaign 1: high-ticket protection. Keywords: ceramic coating, ceramic coating [city], paint protection film, paint correction, swirl removal, graphene coating. Expect $4 to $11 a click and $45 to $120 per lead. This is the campaign that pays for the account.

Campaign 2: core detailing. Keywords: car detailing near me, auto detailing [city], interior detailing, mobile detailing [city], full detail. Expect $2 to $6 a click and $18 to $60 per lead.

Campaign 3: high-margin one-offs. Keywords: pet hair removal car, headlight restoration, odor removal car, vomit cleanup car, boat detailing, RV detailing. Cheap clicks, low volume, and very little competition. Small budget, consistently profitable.

If you are mobile, add "mobile" and "comes to you" variants across all three, and set your radius by drive time you will actually accept rather than a lazy 25 miles.

The negative keyword list that saves the account

Build this before you turn anything on. In detailing, the wasted spend is predictable:

  • wash, self serve, self service, coin, touchless, tunnel, unlimited, membership, drive through
  • free, cheap, coupon, groupon, $5, $10, $20
  • job, jobs, hiring, salary, career, apprentice
  • how to, diy, tutorial, youtube, best product, review of, vs
  • supplies, products, buy, kit, polisher, chemical guys, meguiars
  • interior design, house cleaning, carpet cleaning

The product searches are the big one. Enthusiasts researching which polisher to buy will click your ad, read nothing, and cost you six dollars. Check the search terms report weekly for the first month and add anything irrelevant.

Ad schedule and the calls you cannot take

Run ads when someone can answer. If your shop closes at 5 and nobody picks up at 6:30, either pause the ads at 5 or set up missed-call text-back so the call converts anyway. Paying $6 for a click that rings out is the most expensive mistake in the account and it is invisible unless you check.

Weekend behavior is worth knowing. Saturday morning is the heaviest search window in this trade and only 49.9% of listings even show Saturday hours. If you work Saturdays, bid up Saturday. The missed calls guide covers what to do about the calls you cannot pick up.

Ads, extensions, and the landing page

Write ads that qualify, not ads that maximize clicks. "Full details from $199" gets fewer clicks and more bookings than "Best detailing in town." Put a price band in the headline or the description on every campaign.

Use call assets so mobile searchers can tap to call from the ad. Use location assets if you have a shop. Use sitelinks pointing at your coating page, your interior page, your pricing page and your booking page.

Send the traffic to a page matching the search. Coating clicks go to the coating page, with the process explained, the warranty, twenty photos of finished cars and a booking button. Sending every campaign to the homepage cuts conversion roughly in half. The website guide has the page list.

Tracking, or you are guessing

Set up conversion tracking before the first click. At minimum: calls from ads longer than 60 seconds, calls from the website number, form submissions, and completed bookings. Google's conversion action for calls from ads is free and takes ten minutes.

Then check three numbers monthly: cost per lead by campaign, close rate by campaign, and revenue per campaign. Detailers who quit Google Ads almost always quit without knowing which of the three campaigns was profitable. It is usually campaign one carrying campaign two.

What about Performance Max

Skip it under $3,000 a month. PMax spreads spend across Display and YouTube inventory where nobody is buying a detail today, and it hides the search terms so you cannot see the waste. Once search is profitable and you have real conversion data, a PMax campaign can extend reach. Not before.

Frequently asked

How long before it works? Give it 60 days. The first two weeks are calibration and the search terms report is ugly; that is normal. If cost per lead has not stabilized by day 45, the problem is usually match types or the landing page, not the budget.

Should I bid on competitors' names? It is allowed and it is cheap, but in a trade this local it earns you a rivalry for a handful of clicks. Spend that money on coating terms instead.

Do I need a website, or can ads go to my Google profile? You need a page. Google Ads cannot point at a Business Profile, and 34.3% of shops in this trade have no site, which is exactly why paid search is winnable for the ones that do.
