What 73,083 auto detailers and car washes look like on Google

Detailing is one of the few trades where the work sells itself on camera and still nobody calls. You can pull a swirl-free finish out of a black tailgate, post the clip, get 4,000 views and zero bookings. That gap between good work and booked work is what this site is about.

The rule here is that every guide gives you the whole method, with numbers, whether or not you ever talk to us. If you would rather have it run for you, pick a service and we do it for 14 days free. No card. If the calendar does not fill, you are out one setup call.

What is on the site

The benchmark report is built from 73,083 public Google Business Profile listings for detailers and car washes across 51 states. The median shop has 24 reviews. 34.3% list no website at all. Shops with a website carry a median of 51 reviews against 5 for shops without one. Read it before you spend a dollar on ads, because it tells you where you actually sit.

The guides cover what moves a detailing business: getting reviews from customers who are already thrilled at handover, a Google profile that ranks whether you are mobile or fixed, ads that sell ceramic coating instead of $30 washes, before-and-after video that converts instead of just entertaining, deposits that end no-shows, and how to land dealership and fleet accounts that pay every week.

The missed-call calculator takes your own ticket average and call volume and shows what unanswered calls cost per month. At a $210 average detail, a handful of missed calls a week is a truck payment.

Who writes this

Steve Meitler edits the site. He has run growth campaigns for local service businesses for years, detail shops and wash operators among them, and builds the benchmark dataset himself from public listings. More on the about page.

The coating window opens in two weeks. Here is the plan.

September and October are when coatings and correction actually sell. A four week plan to fill those bays before the weather turns and the phone quiets.

What should a full detail cost in 2026?

Typical US price ranges for interior, full detail, correction and coating this year, and why refusing to publish a number hands the booking to somebody else.

Questions

Common questions

How many Google reviews does a detail shop need?

Enough to beat the three shops you appear beside. Across 73,083 detailing and car wash listings the median is 24 reviews and 37.2% sit under 10. In a real metro the shops holding the map pack are past 100, which only 28.4% of shops reach. A working target is one review per completed vehicle day, asked for at handover with the customer standing next to the car. The reviews guide has the script.

Everyone in my area has 5.0 stars. Does rating matter?

Less than you think. 43.9% of listings in the dataset show a perfect 5.0, mostly because they have six reviews. The average is 4.6 and 72.1% are at 4.5 or above, so a high rating is table stakes. Count and recency are the separators. A shop at 4.8 with 240 reviews outranks and outsells a 5.0 with 9.

What does a detailing lead cost on Google Ads?

Usually $18 to $60 per lead for interior and full details, and $45 to $120 for ceramic coating and paint correction searches, which are more expensive and worth far more. Shops that lose money almost always run broad match on "car wash near me" with no negative keywords, which buys clicks from people looking for a $12 tunnel. Details in the Google Ads guide.

Should I be mobile or take a shop?

That is a business question, but it changes your marketing. Mobile shops rank on a service-area profile with no pin, so reviews and website content carry more weight and radius targeting matters more. Fixed locations get map-pack visibility, drive-by traffic, and can sell memberships. The Google profile guide covers how to set up each one.
