What a website with online booking costs a detailer, and the month it pays back
A plain cost breakdown of a detailing website with online booking and deposits, what you pay up front and monthly, and how many details it takes to break even.
Someone sits on their couch at 9pm, looks at their car in the driveway, and searches for a detailer. If your only option is "call us," they wait until tomorrow, and by tomorrow they may have booked the shop that let them pick a time on their phone.
A website with online booking catches those people. The question is what it costs and how fast it pays for itself. Here is the breakdown.
Where detailers start
Across the 73,083 detailing and car wash listings we track, 34.3% have no website on their Google profile. The listings with a website carry a median of 51 reviews. The ones without carry a median of 5.
A website does not create reviews by itself. But detailers with sites tend to be the ones running their business on purpose, and customers can tell. The benchmark report breaks this down by state.
What it costs
There are three common ways to set this up. Prices are typical ranges, not quotes.
A booking tool page with no real website. Cost: about $0 to $50 a month. Many booking apps give you a public booking page. It works, but it does not show up well in Google searches and it does not explain your packages the way a real site can.
A simple site built on a template, with a booking tool connected. Cost: roughly $300 to $1,500 to build, plus $20 to $60 a month for hosting and $30 to $100 a month for the booking tool. This is where most solo and two-person detailing businesses land.
A custom site with booking, deposits and reminders built in. Cost: roughly $2,000 to $5,000 to build, plus $50 to $200 a month for hosting, booking and texting. This makes sense if you run multiple vans or a shop with several bays.
Add your own time: about two to four hours to write your service descriptions, set your prices and upload your best photos.
The payback math
Here is a hypothetical. You pick the middle option: $800 to build and $100 a month for hosting and booking. Your average detail is $200.
- In month one, you need about five extra bookings to cover the build and the first month.
- After that, you need one extra booking a month to cover the monthly cost.
The real question is whether online booking brings those extra cars. A few ways it usually does:
- Late-night bookings. People book when they think of it, which is often after hours.
- Fewer lost callers. Some people will not call at all. They want to see prices and pick a time.
- Fewer no-shows when you take a deposit. A small deposit at booking means the customer has skin in the game.
If online booking wins you even one or two extra details a week, a $100 monthly bill paid back in the first month.
What the site has to include
A website only pays back if it actually books cars. The website essentials guide covers this in detail, but the short list is:
- Prices, shown as bands. "Interior detail, sedans from $150, SUVs from $190." People need a number.
- A booking button on every page. Not buried on a contact page.
- Real photos of your work. Before and after, from your own jobs.
- Your service area. Especially if you are mobile.
- A deposit at booking. Even $25 to $50 cuts no-shows.
- Fast load on a phone. Most of your visitors are on mobile.
- A link from your Google profile. The site does nothing for your listing if it is not linked.
When it does not pay
A website with booking will not help much if:
- You are already booked out weeks ahead with repeat customers. You need higher prices, not more bookings.
- You do mostly fleet or dealer work that comes by phone and contract.
- Nobody updates the calendar. If people book times you cannot actually do, you will lose them and probably get a bad review.
It also will not fix missed calls on its own. Some people will still call. A text-back on every missed call covers them. The calculator shows what missed calls cost at your average ticket.
The short version
A simple detailing site with online booking typically costs a few hundred to a little over a thousand dollars to build and around $50 to $150 a month to run. At a $200 average detail, it pays back with a handful of extra bookings in the first month and one or two a month after that. Start with prices, a booking button, real photos and a deposit, and link it from your Google profile.
