Google Ads or Instagram for ceramic coating jobs: when each one wins
Two ways to sell a $900 to $2,000 coating job. When Google search ads win, when Instagram wins, what each costs, and how to tell which one fits your shop.
A detailer wants more ceramic coating jobs, has $1,000 a month to spend, and gets two opposite pieces of advice. One person says Google Ads, because people search for coatings. Another says Instagram, because coatings are visual and nobody knows they want one until they see a black truck that looks wet.
Both are right, in different situations. Here is how to tell which one fits your shop.
The difference in one line
Google Ads catches people who already decided they want a coating. Instagram creates people who decide they want one.
Everything else follows from that. The person typing "ceramic coating near me" has already done the research and is shopping for a provider and a price. The person scrolling Instagram had no plan to spend $1,200 on their car today, and your video has to change their mind.
When Google Ads wins
You are in a metro with real search volume. In a city of 300,000 or more, there are people searching "ceramic coating [city]" every day. In a small town there may be a handful a month, and you will burn budget on broad terms.
You can answer the phone during business hours. Search leads are hot for about an hour. If the call goes to voicemail, they call the next shop in the results. The missed calls guide covers text-back for the times you are under a car.
Your reviews hold up next to the competition. Search shoppers compare. The median detailing listing in our data has 24 reviews, but the top ten percent sit at 400 or more, and shops like that are who you sit next to in the results. If you are at 15 reviews against a competitor at 300, your click turns into a call less often.
Typical numbers: in many markets, clicks on coating terms run $3 to $10, and a reasonable cost per lead is $30 to $90. If one in three leads books at a $1,200 average, a $1,000 month can carry its own weight with room to spare. These are ranges, not promises. The Google Ads guide covers keywords, negatives and budget splits.
When Instagram wins
Your work looks good on camera. Coating is the most visual product in the trade. A ten-second clip of water sheeting off a hood, or a slow pan across a paint correction under shop lights, sells better than anything you could write.
You are in a smaller market. Instagram and Facebook ads target by location and interest, not by what someone typed. If there is not enough search volume around you, paid social can still reach every car owner within 20 miles.
You can wait. Social leads are cooler. Many will message, ask a price, and disappear for two weeks. Someone needs to follow up, and the sale often closes on the second or third conversation.
You want new-car owners specifically. You can target people who recently engaged with car dealership pages or new-vehicle content. Those are the best coating prospects there are.
Typical numbers: $15 to $40 a day is enough to test. Cost per message often runs lower than a search lead, but fewer of those messages turn into bookings, so the cost per booked coating can end up similar. The Facebook and Instagram ads guide walks through creative and targeting.
A side-by-side
| Google search ads | Instagram and Facebook ads | |
|---|---|---|
| Who sees it | People already searching | People who were not looking |
| Lead temperature | Hot, ready to book | Warm to cold, needs follow-up |
| Best market size | Mid to large metro | Any, including small towns |
| What sells it | Reviews, price, speed of answer | Video, before and after |
| Time to first booking | Days | Weeks |
| Main way it fails | Missed calls, thin reviews | Weak creative, no follow-up |
The website gap matters for both
Whichever channel you pick, the click lands somewhere. Across 73,083 detailing listings, 34.3% have no website linked, and listings with a site carry a median of 51 reviews against 5 without. Sending ad traffic to an Instagram profile instead of a coating page with packages and prices leaks a lot of it. Your coating page should show two or three package tiers, a starting price, and before and after photos. The pricing guide has a structure for those tiers.
If you only have budget for one
Pick based on two questions:
- Do people in your area search for coatings? Open Google's Keyword Planner, type "ceramic coating" and your city, and look at monthly searches. If it is in the hundreds, search wins.
- Can you shoot a clean ten-second video this week? If yes and search volume is thin, start with Instagram.
If both answers are yes, start with search because it books faster, then add social once the search campaign is paying for itself. If neither is yes, spend the month on reviews and your profile instead. The benchmarks page shows where your review count sits against the market.
